Known as "Low Dike B", the dike and access road shown running left-to-right toward the bottom of the photograph created the western boundary of what would become Bingen Harbor and isolated the eastern end of the inlet that continued west (right) to the Columbia River. It was completed in May 1962 by Duhrkop & Wallace at a cost of $15,068. Additional work in May 1963, completed by the same contractor at a cost of $38,123, would raise the dike to its present elevation. The water shown here was a long, winding inlet that connected with the Columbia River at the west end of Bingen Point. The future site of the first building at Bingen Point can be seen to the right, approximately half-way up the photograph. The area had yet to be filled to the proper elevation in this picture. Material to do so would come, in part, from dredging an entrance to the harbor from the Columbia River.
